No question. Do not read. lucent winmodem oldbsd.

i have that weird subject because this isn't really a question, but i'm excited about
something, and i had to share. I have several version of linux on my machine,
and freebsd, openbsd, and netbsd. the bsd's are all about 2 years old i think.
i recently abandoned my motherboard that had an isa slot, and i have about 10
isa modems, so i didn't want to do it. i love having an isa modem at com2, so
i can install different operating systems, and all i have to figure out is how that os
refers to the serial ports. i've been using a lucent win modem for a while and
i sort of like netbsd the most, and i searched for a lucent driver for netbsd, and
found the one that says it works on netbsd and freebsd. i really only used the
bsd's for about a month 2 years ago, so i could barely remember stuff about it.
i had no luck with the driver under netbsd, but under freebsd, i was following
the instructions for installing the module, and noticed that the files i was copying
weren't ending up where they were supposed to be. I forgot that i had put the
redhat 6.2 cp command on the bsd's because i wanted the --colors option and
the bsd version didn't have it. i thought i remembered fixing that later, but i guess
i didn't. the redhat cp would copy the files to the chrooted environment it makes
for redhat. I have no idea if this is even relevant in current versions of the bsd's.
anyway, the instructions weren't really correct either. the files it said to copy
didn't exist where the README said they were. That only set me back 5 minutes.
one part that didn't work in the install was the command that made the device.
i was suprised it compiled though. i was trying to remember how freebsd does
the ppp. it took me about 10 guesses, then i had to figure out what config fiel
had the device configuration, so i changed those to the lucent. I had already
loaded the module, and i was suprised that worked too. i had to figure out
the mknod command and the major and minor version, and shazam, it dialed,
and i'm connected. i bet i can get it working in netbsd now too.
anyway, just sharing. it took me a half hour to get the modem working, and
almost 15 minutes to type this.
boy are these apps old mozilla 0.8.1 and other oldies.
does freebsd now handle ide cdwriters with cdrecord?
i bet thats been working for over a year. i should just check.
