mount /dev/ad0s4a /somewhere
Got the other freebsd partition mounted, From what I understand freebsd has ntfs support but I guess ya have to rebake the kernel. I had to add COMPAT_LINUX and atapicam to the kernel config so i could install java, and use cdrecord or cdrdao to burn cd's. I didn't set up linprocfs and the install worked, I think package manager took care of all that. I'll look over the compile and see if the system set up linprocfs automatically.

There are pure ata tools as well. Burncd is one of them.

Well I've just installed PCBSD and DesktopBSD and I most impressed I found there are really easy to install so If you think you may have problems since your new I would suggest these 2 distros since they are both based on FreeBSD.

My machine is a xp2200+ with a 1GB of ram and took about 10 minutes to install, try getting that on a windoze machine! plus there is no bloat with too many packaeges installed.
