1). For one thing lets make sure you understand BSD is not linux
2). For xdm , edit /etc/ttys, look for the line containing the string xdm, and change "off" to "on". To use startx, you will need to install the xwrapper port, because on FreeBSD, the X Server run's without the suid bit set (for security reasons).
To start it automatically, you could put a script into /usr/local/etc/rc.d (look at the existing ones there for reference).
3). What kind of soundcard? What desktop enviroment? Have you recompiled your kernel to add sound support?
4). What BDS? Open? Free? Net? lainOS?
