Mac OS X for Linux user - book recommendation?
Hi All!
I guess the header says it all: I need a book to get me started on Mac OS X. I have half a year's autodidactic linux experience, tried various distributions, strong on the command line, bash and perl programming, dabbled with python and c. I hope to make my Mac OS X similarly powerful - is that possible? What's a good book or web resource? Thanks, Samsara |
My best guess would be to look at O'Reilly books and maybe read some of their reviews.
I started to buy a Mac when they were struggling... when Bill Gates bought a strong stake in Mac I changed my mind! I doubt you will ever be able to acquire all the "power" of linux as it is a dynamic process that fuels development. (of linux) You have some good looking skillsets! |
first find
Thanks for your comments, jdh77! After trawling through some reviews, this book seems to come out tops:
Mac OS X Hacks by Rael Dornfest, Kevin Hemenway O'Reilly I've read excerpts of the Google Hacks in the same series, and found it interesting, although I'd already implemented a lot of what they suggested before reading the book. But the Mac OS X one seems to be loved by all reviewers, and you can't really fault the no-nonsense, text-only, cheap paperback approach of the series ;) I'll post again if I find any more favourable reviews. All the best, Samsara |
My most recent book acquisition is "Hacking Exposed, Third Edition." (with CD)
I highly recommend it. It covers Network Security Secrets & Solutions, platform nuetral. (But treats UNIX/Linux/M$Window$xx separately) New, I picked it up off half.com for a song! I hope to do a little bit about resources before long. (CDs, books & web) I'll post them when I do. |
