Lots of disk space missing

After using computers since I was four years old I do know that the drive manufacturers promotes the decimal size (1000 MB -> 1 GB) of a drive and not the binary size (1024 MB -> 1 GB), on Linux, ext3, my 250 GB drive shows up as something around 232 GB, on FreeBSD, ufs, it shows up as 225 GB. So far that's normal but what I don't understand is when I check the total size of every file on my 250 GB (232 GB) drive it says that they all take up 70 MB, and yet Konqueror reports that 9% of the drive is used and only 207 GB is free.

WTF is going on? Is this normal? Over 10 GB is missing!

hi

my disk is 80gb, but under any os, it says that is 76.3 gb

the manufacturer says in bytes, but the os does the /1024/1024 count . its 101010 style, on/of
binary stuff, so 2^10 = a 1K

Yeah, that's what I'm saying, 76 GB is indeed normal for a 80 GB drive, but I've never seen a 250 GB drive only have 207 GB available.

I use a WD Raptor for my system drive and I've sliced and diced it into this layout:

512M - /
2048M - swap
512M - /var
1024M - /tmp
ROD - /usr

ROD = Rest Of Drive

And then I have a 250 GB Seagate drive for /home, and it's the FreeBSD partition (/dev/ad6s1d) that seem to have 225 GBs and for some reason Konqueror reports that only 207 GB is available.

By default FreeBSD reserves 8% of the disk space for performance reasons.

From 'man tunefs'

-m minfree
Specify the percentage of space held back from normal users; the
minimum free space threshold. The default value used is 8%.
Note that lowering the threshold can adversely affect perfor-

Thanks a lot man, you got me out of my confusion!

If I can ask a favor of you, could you check this thread out: http://www.bsdforums.org/forums/showthread.php?t=36817
I think that's the last thing that holds me back from finishing my move to FreeBSD.

I had a problem with my 250GB Maxtor hard drive; whenever my FreeBSD box was shutdown improperly I had to reformat the drive because the partition was irreparably damaged. Even though I could format the drive and all my diagnostic utilities told me the drive was OK, I only solved the problem when I replaced it with another hard disk, so don't be so certain that your hard disk is not faulty.
If you're 100% certain that your disk is not faulty then all I can suggest is to check the cables.
