Keyboard dies at FreeBSD install

I'm trying to get FreeBSD 5.4 installed on an old Netvista and my PS/2 keyboard just will not work. I originally had the PC hooked up to KVM switch and had no luck so I moved to a different keyboard/mouse combo. No luck there either. It's got the most recent BIOS. The keyboard works perfectly outside of the FreeBSD install screen, but once I get to the list of options (start a standard install, go to loader prompt, etc.) it arrows down once or twice and then dies. There is never an error when booting. I've tried booting in safe mode, etc. Has anyone else ever had a PS/2 keyboard issue??

Never a PS/2 issue, only USB. ACPI is known to cause many problems: can you boot the installation without that?

Yah...tried that too.
