Question KDM and temp console mode login

I've got KDM setup to login to the system using /etc/ttys as described in the handbook What I'm trying to find is an easy way to temporarily shutdown the xserver and back out to a console login in order to perform system updates (I don't thinks it's a good idea to update KDE or X while they are running). Right now all I've found is to edit ttys changing the kdm line to "off" and rebooting, doing the update, re-editing ttys to turn kdm "on", and re-rebooting.

Any ideas? I thought about making a script that changes ttys automatically for me, but I still have to wait for two reboots....

Thanks,
Micah
