install linux apps in pcbsd

i just came from suse 10.2 and xp to pc-bsd. and i like the os, its stable, elegant, but there is not many programs that are available in pbi packages. i found out i can install linux programs as long as i have a compatibility layer installed. i removed the redhat9 layer and installed redhat8.8 (this is recomended by pbidir.com) so now that i have that in place does it work with source, or rpms? i tried an rpm but i couldnt figure out what to open it with. anyone know how to install a linux app on pc-bsd?

I've never used PC-BSD, but I wonder if a more elegant solution wouldn't be to just install the apps you need from ports (if a pbi isn't available).

What are some of the apps you want to install?
