I successfully installed FreeBSD + KDE

I am so smart, I am so smart, S-M-R-T!

I just wanted to gloat in a public arena about my awesomeness. I successfully installed FreeBSD + KDE last night, made it boot straight to KDE and successfully updated grub to have the FreeBSD 6.2 option in the menu.

Wasn't so hard when I actually read the instructions from the website.

Does this mean you're smart, or does this mean the procedures are well documented in the handbook?

Anyway, congratulations. FBSD is different from GNU/Linux in many ways, but if you take the time to continue to learn about it you'll be very satisfied.

A little from column A, a little from column B.

I know, the install forced me to think back 5 long years ago when I was studying IT at university for the first time and used the odd unix command during the introduction to programming courses. It is amazing what I find inside that head of mine when I dust it off and use it from time to time. Maybe I should get a more stable OS for it so it is more relliable?

Now that I am actually making an effort to use *BSD & *nix I am quite pleased with myself, as a bonus it is helping me to understand my computer a whole lot more and making the return attempt at uni so much more enjoyable as I am implementing what I am learning.

Congrats. But I like typing startx in order to start the display so that if someone tries to get into my FreeBSD installation they'll have no idea what to do.

I had the worst time trying to get Nvidia's openGL library set up. I even reinstalled the whole system, and then installed the drivers, but that actually did work. I had to set the X11BASE environment variable before any attempts AT ALL to install Nvidia 3d driver. I also downloaded the newest version of SDL from ports, 1.2-11 or whatever and it is messed up with sound. I had to manually fix the source code in it to make it work. But now I have an awesome FreeBSD installation.

So now I dual-boot Ubuntu 7.04 and FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE. The way my wireless card is set up in FreeBSD causes it to work better than it does in Ubuntu. In Ubuntu, it keeps disconnecting and asking for the WEP key, but on FreeBSD it seems constantly connected. Gnome-network manager has gone downhill from Ubuntu Dapper to Feisty.

Congratulations... it seems I am hearing this kind of story rather frequently lately.
