How to start Fluxbox in FreeBSD 7.0

I installed Gnome and Fluxbox, I haven't configured it so that
startx with bring up gnome or fluxbox it starts xorg alone. I know how to start gnome by typing Gdm.But I haven't been able to start fluxbox.
(I tried exec fluxbox and it said unable to connect to xserver.)
Also I updated my ports with portsnap and for some reason
some applications won't compile *It gives me a error 1 or a error 2*
I was unable to compile thunderbird but sudo compiled perfectly

any ideas?

Thanks for the Help(I am still a :newbie: to BSD but I am learning * I only ask questions that only a seasoned user would know* ;)

Read Chapter 5 The X Window System and be sure you haven't missed anything.

To start fluxbox you'll need an entry in ~/.xinitrc:
Code:

exec fluxbox
