Hi guys!
I've been doing a lot of searching around the net before one of my co-workers suggested that I come here.
:: Background ::
I've got a pair of SGI O2's (both R5000's I believe) and while I have a set of IRIX 6.5.x CD's (which I JUST found out how to use >.<) I'm not really keen on using what is likely an outdated, and sadly closed-source OS. The guy I got the machines from pointed out that he knew that there were BSD's that supported the archetecture. Dismayed that FreeBSD didn't have what I wanted I went to NetBSD (mostly because I've had bad experiences with installing OpenBSD >.<).
At this point I have the NetBSD ISO image burned onto a CD-RW and eventually a CD-R (since the CD-RW seemed to not work). Downloaded "sgimipscd-3.0.iso" from
-- Ftp ://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/iso/3.0/ --
:: The Problem ::
I am unable to install NetBSD onto an SGI O2 system.
When following the instructions (Here: ftp ://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-2.0.2/sgimips/INSTALL.html#Install%20via%20a%20bootable%20CD-ROM)
After making sure that the environment variables are set properly (using >>printenv)
Code:
>> setenv systempartition scsi(0)disk(X)rdisk(0)partition(8) # Default Value
>> setenv osloadpartition scsi(0)disk(X)rdisk(0)partition(0) # Default Value
>> setenv osloadfilename netbsd
>> setenv osloadoptions auto
>> setenv osloader boot
I then type the following command per the above listed instructions
Code:
>> boot -f pci(0)scsi(0)cdrom(4)rdisk(0)partition(8)ip3xboot
I then get the following result.
Code:
dks0d4s8: Volume Header Not Valid
Unable to excecute pci(0)scsi(0)cdrom(4)rdisk(0)partition(8)ip3xboot : Media not loaded.
Unable to load pci(0)scsi(0)cdrom(4)rdisk(0)partition(8)ip3xboot : No recognizable file system
Then it dumps me back into the chevron/(PROM?) promt.
:: Further Information ::
First, lemme start by saying; this is my first experience with an SGI system so please bear with me on this learning curve.
Secondly, I have also tried other confurations of the boot command. Where I also replaced the second x (in ip3xboot) with the revision # which I
believe is 0. However since it was not explicitly in the instructions I'm not entirely sure.
Lastly, I have been running this install with
Code:
>> setenv console g
Where g is the graphical interface. The OpenBSD install seems to want to setup the environment using a null modem cable. Does this apply here?
Thanks In Advance!
-Pete
P.s. Try not to crack your skulls too hard on this one. I have another system which I'm going to attempt an IRIX install on so time is not an issue.
