Question freebsd software installations


how do i install new softwares in unix? i downloaded firefox in pcbsd running on vmware. .i dont know what to do with it. saved to a folder in documents, there are some files inside the firefox folder ..like bin ,include ,lib, +INSTALL ,+CONTENTS etc.

is this a port or a package?
how do i "compile" it???

it depends on what you downloaded,
./configure
make
make install
should do the install.
You could use the ports on the system present at
/usr/ports
find where firefox is
and just do a make install there, all dependencies will be installed to, so hassles in running.

Get PC BSD packages from here: http://www.pbidir.com/

Or use the ports tree; just change directory to the location of the software you want to install (`cd /usr/ports/www/firefox`) and type "make install clean" as root. PC BSD is pretty closely based on FreeBSD so nearly all the FreeBSD documentation will apply to PC BSD as well, including the all-important FreeBSD Handbook.

Many more resources and tutorials can be found with a simple internet search.

it did work in freebsd but not in pcdsd .i tried evrything but failed, mayb its bcoz i did it all wrong . .

heres the screenshot ..how do i configure from there?
