Freebsd and Vmware

Hi, im using freebsd 6 and am currently preparing for my CCNA examination, the problem im facing is that the router simulator that i use does not work with wine and i cant seem to find one for bsd.

Is it possible or practial for me to install Vmware on my freebsd and run a windows xp virutal machine to run the router simulator ? I noticed that the ports directory contains a vmware folder but i have also read that vmware is a commecrial product, would i need to purchase a lisence key to use it and how much of a performance decrease would there be as my laptop only has 128 ram.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A couple things:
  • I don't know the official status of the relationship between FBSD and vmware, but a search on freshports shows a caveat: RESTRICTED: "Not sure if we can redistribute this.".
  • A commonly used emulator under FBSD (i.e. FBSD as the host) is qemu. See this helpful howto written by vermaden: http://www.bsdforums.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46399
  • On a laptop with 128MB RAM (and what CPU??), you're going to have a near impossible time trying to run Windows XP under emulation...
