FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE questions -wireless, sound

I've never felt so uneducated about computers in my life, but here's my next host of questions.

First, for some reason I can't access the root login from KDE. Where should I go to do that, and how? I've not yet figured out how to get back to the original prompt, and it automatically opens to KDE now (which really took some doing on my part, thanks to my n00b-ness).

The next thing is, from both GNOME and KDE I've yet to be able to get my sound up and running. This isn't a big priority, since I'm sure more poking and prodding around will get it going, but I wanted to throw it out there in case someone can speed up the process.

The last thing, and really the biggest right now, is internet access. When the network configuration stuff came up, I had not a clue what I'm doing.

Hardware:
Motherboard: Asus A8V-E SE Motherboard
- VIA K8T890 + VT8237R Chipset
- Hyper Transport technology
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400 2.2GHz 2000MHZ
- Dual Core Processor
- Supports Dual Channel Memory
Audio: 8 Channel Audio On Board
ATI Radeon X1300 series (can't find the box, and comp currently in use)
BENQ DVD LightScribe
Netgear RangeMax Wireless PCI Adaptor

Internet:
Comcast Cable modem (don't use username or password)
Netgear 802.11g Wireless Router (No WEP key)

You can open a console and
Code:
su -
to root. Or if you've forgotten to add your user to the wheel group to allow you to su, you can simply use one of your VTs. Use Ctrl + Alt + F2 (as an example). Then you can login as root and do what you need to. To get back to KDE, use Ctrl + Alt + F9.

I have no idea what you have or have not tried, so if I were you I'd start here: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO...und-setup.html

What is your question about network configuration? You can still run
Code:
sysinstall
at this point to configure your network card. Just set it up to use DHCP for its IP address and nameservers.
