I did! Well, I have access to them now - which is best. Now, I just need to work out a way to shift ~600GB of files around and find another large disk to store them while I format the drives as ext2 (or ext3).

Great! I would never use EXT2 again except for a boot partition. One power failure could toast your whole filesystem. EXTx are both slow, at least use the journal option.
