Turned out to be a stack alignment problem, a 64-bit issue, apparently nothing to do with BSD vs Linux. If interested, see this thread in the Proramming forum for more details.

Am re-marking this thread as [Solved].

The answer to my original question is: signal 10 means bus error. (Whether this is unique to BSD, or the BSD running on my hosting server, I couldn't say.)
