Editing data on an NTFS drive? from FreeBSD?
 

Is it possible yet? I know when i was using RH9 a year back it was not possible. If it is not possible still what commands or programs can i use to convert my ntfs drive to fat32 without losing the data?

Even if you can, it may not be a good idea to write to an ntfs partition under Linux or Unix. Have you tried Googling for programs that allow you to do this? I know I found some programs that claim to be able to write to NTFS partitions for Linux before, didn't actually try them though.

While it is POSSIBLE to write to NTFS it is highly discouraged. The NT filesystem is heavily dependent on the Windows kernel.

I don't know of programs to do a convertion but I am certain they exist. Worst case, you start an ftp server on the NT machine and then pull everything you need over a local network onto a machine with a decent filesystem.

I don't understand why you would want to go from NTFS to FAT32.


Writing to an NTFS partition is *possible* but you need to run a utility called ntfsfix EVERY time you write to the partition. I don't know that it, or R/W capability for that matter, has been ported to BSD, but it exists for Linux.

The reason i would want to convert it was because last time i checked it was much safer.

huh? FAT32 safer than NTFS? I'm fairly certain it's the other way round ;)

I was sure it was the right way round i said it because the kernel has always given support to write to Fat32.

Well it's safer to mount FAT32 partitions in a non-Windows OS, but if you're using Windows then NTFS is a far better way to go.
