Earthlink DSL...

Well, since noone seems to be around to be annoyed by me in this forum anyway, let me post another question...

;)

In the FreeBSD install I get to configure my internet connection. Now my card (3COM Ethernet PCMCIA) gets picked up all nice like, and I get to run DHCP and all that, but of course, this being Earthlink, there is no such thing as picking up the settings this way. So... FreeBSD kindly asks me to fill in the details myself. Which is fine, seeing as they even notify you in the manual to get all the IP and DNS info before the install anyway, but it's kinda hard to fill things out if your ISP doesn't provide them, nor makes them available in any other way (i.e. DHCP).

Sooooo... what do we then normally do? Well... in Slackware I get to type (as root) "adsl-setup", fill in my username and password and other stuffs, and then I get to type "adsl-start". Et voila.... Earthlink DSL up and running. Now... does FreeBSD have anything like that?

Thanks again for the help, and in the meantime I'll be reading that manual.

:study:

P.S.: oh goody... I just got off the phone with the friendly helpers at Earthlink ( ) and they gave me the primary and secondary DNS server IP's.... hurray!!! So yeah... nevermind about that server-assigned personal IP address and inability to use DHCP right? ;)

Wow.... thank God I have nothing whatsoever to do in the middle of the night...

:D

Anyway... for a DSL connection:

Go to http://renaud.waldura.com/doc/freebsd/pppoe/ and read it. If you can't find the tun's it doesn't necessarily mean you don't have 'm (I recompiled twice per directions and they *still* weren't showing up), but just to be sure compile a new-ish kernel per the directions on http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO...-building.html

Perhaps if you actually put

"pseudo-device tun"

and not just

"device tun"

like I did the tun's will show up in the correct place.

Aaaaaaaaanyway.... a tip: in FreeBSD 5.1 the MAKEDEV doesn't work... I fiddled around with "devfs", but it wasn't loving me. No worries, as per the example of me, the PPP setup works without the tun's showing up in the right place as well (if it doesn't work I'm not taking the blame... I'm NOT! :D ).

Well, happy DSL-ing to all, and I'm off to bed (finally...).
