dns settings

I am using free bsd 4.8 and I am trying to run "cvsup supfile" and I am getting the error message "cannot get the ip address of my own host -- is it's hostname correct?".
I am runnign a home network with two computer and a sbc 2 wire router/modem. I am using ethernet on this modem and the firewall is turned off. How could I verify the dns settings are correct? I would appreciate the help.

Is the hostname correct? You could put your hostname -> IP address mapping in your hosts file (you probably should do so). Also, if this machine's hostname should be registered in DNS somewhere, you can check for that using

dig <your_hostname>

and seeing what answer you get. I'm guessing that since the machine is on a home network, it probably doesn't have the hostname in DNS, and the hosts file is the way to go.
