I've only just started playing with FreeBSD, but just looking at my fresh install of 6.2-RELEASE, there is no rc.local file.

Would your rc.local file be one you made yourself? And either way, I don't understand how a missing rc.local file could start all services twice...

There is no rc.local in the base install nor is one required for the boot process. If the file exists it will be run by /etc/rc.d/local but if it doesn't, nothing happens.

There is no reason this would cause all the services to be starting twice. Something else has happened... what else changed?

rc.local is used only to run on startup local systems.

Your are the one to list scripts to run your local programs in /etc/rc.d/rc.local by editing it or creating a new one.

You have nothing to be alarmed actually.

I'm sorry i thought the default rc file was rc.local. What im trying to say is that the default rc file that rc.conf overides was deleted.

Found the fix.

All i had to do was add local_startup="/usr/local/etc/rc.d" to my rc.conf and it corrected the issue.
thanks for the help!!

thanks
