cannot start the graphical mode

When I boot FreeBSD, I get a unix command line after I log in. I type the command "startx" to start the graphical mode. I get errors, and it will not start. I can not send /usr/log/Xorg.0.log because javascript does not work in links web browser. I can not send email or do normal tasks because links is limited. I get errors about default pointer, core device, missing files or directories, fbdev module did not load(not found), and some others. I also could not send the bug report from FreeBSD because I can not view the Jpeg image showing the confirmation code, and I can also not send emails. Now I have the problem reported to bugs, and I am using knoppix. It makes a great recovery disk. Please help. Thank you. I forgot to say I am using release 5.4.

Do you have XFree86 or Xorg installed? Try runnfing xf86config or xorgconfig (depending on which you have installed) again to set your X config file. If this doesn't work, post the last few lines of the error output (not the whole log).

I could not get the cds to work. I kept getting errors about reading from some device(4 letters). I did a net install from the first cd. From the first time it asked me what to install, I chose all. The seconds time much later it asked me what to install I only chose a few items because it would take so long and I wanted to do that after I boot the system. Was this where I chose to install a graphical part. I did not know that did not come automatically or does it. There are so many files to chose from. How would I know what to get?

Chances are you did not install an X server.

The absolute easiest way to install one would be to run "sysinstall" as root, then select configure, then packages, then FTP.

From there install kde/gnome/xfce/windowmaker/whatever DE/WM you want to use. That should (to my knowledge anyway) install an X server.

Then configure your /etc/X11/xorg.conf the same way you do in linux, and make a .xinitrc in your user's home directory that has the command needed to start your DE(exec gnome-session, exec startkde, exec fluxbox, etc. etc. etc.)

I did the command for the setup. I did not get a manual with my ev700 gateway monitor(has a big round button, not the model with the rectangle cover for buttons) because I got it used. I remember for one of the settings all of the ranges started at 31.5 for the choices on FreeBSD, and when I looked up my monitor online, it did not. So what should I do? I could never find the refresh rate for my monitor. Is that different than the vertical and horizontal refresh rates? I choose some low settings for setup that makes a xorg.conf and now i have a command prompt in a window by itself and a clock with hands. Is that what I am supposed to have? Does anyone have the same monitor and a manual? It is a common monitor. I am not sure what settings to use? Could anyone help with my monitor?

Yes that's the default FreeBSD windows mgr. If you like it keep it, otherwise.

FreeBSD works great. Take a little while to get to know it. It's different than Linux a bit, I prefer it.

I now have the xfce4 Windows Manager installed and working. The resolution is showing in 320X200. My monitor can do 1280x1020. I used the command given to me earlier (xorgconfig) to create an xorg.conf and choose the lowest setting choices of three for 1280x1020.

Hi:

Your EV-700 monitor specs may be found at:

http://www.monitorworld.com/Monitors...000/ev700.html

They appear to be:

- horiz: 30-69 khz
- vert: 50-110 Hz
1164 x 875 maximum resolution

In your Xorg.conf file you should have a "Monitor" section, such as:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName "Monitor Model"
HorizSync 31.5 - 48.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 85.0
EndSection

Substitute the appropriate values for your monitor, as mine are shown. (What you put here depends upon your video card and monitor capabilities. Do not exceed them! )

The Xorg.conf file will contain entries in the "Device" section that provide details about your
video card. Make sure these are correct for your card.

Section "Device"
..... your card detail ...
EndSection

The Xorg.conf file will contain entries in the "Screen" section that provide details about your
screen setup. Here you will enter the desired color depth and the resolution(s) that you want. My color depth of 16 and 800 x 600 resolution is shown. (What you put here depends upon your video card and monitor capabilities. Do not exceed them! )

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 16
Modes "800x600"
EndSubSection

... more subsections follow ...

Then you should be good to go!

I am sorry you had to look for that. I changed my search to only "ev700 resolution" and found this. These are alittle bit different to what you have. This is probably accurate because it is from Gateway. FreeBSD was not displaying resolution right when I had tried lower settings. Also look at how many colors the monitor can display there. When I try anything above 256 colors with "xorgconfig", X will not start.

FreeBSD is reinstalling by ftp right now while I am at school. It will be finished when I get home. I will try a few more ideas to get it to work. This is the closest I have ever had it to working right. If this does not work I will install Ubuntu Breezy Badger in October. I will lower the resolution setting down alittle bit each time to see if that gets it to display right. My monitor was displaying 1280x1080 more than once before without any problems. Besides what I said, does anyone know the solution? I do not see many differences here from Linux.
