Better Virtual Console Resolution Needed

I recently got my hands on FREEBSD 5.3 and installed it on my Compaq Presario 2103 Laptop. I have to admitt the installation was flawless and I have managed to get everything pretty much configured except for my virtual consoles. The consoles only occupy about 1/3 of my lcd display.
I have tried taking the advice from many persons I have met onf #FreeBSD as well as googling here and there for some solution. I have already custome built a kernel including options VESA, and SC_PIXEL_MODE.... with no success... I have already tried using vidcontrol -g 100x37 VESA_800x600, for which I recieve an error report vidcontrol can not set video mode, device not supporte.
My X works fine .. I just want better resolution on my virtual consoles so I can do some man page reading without having to resort to X
