Availability of BSD in Uk

Hi all I have just got rid of rh72 an installed Slack 8.1 (and will soon be trying out Gentoo Linux) however having browsed the forums I have the impression that both of these distro's (Slack & Gentoo) are very similar to BSD if this is the case I would like to try it out.

Now the question where can I get a CD copy of BSD from on the net in the UK????

Also which version is best to take on first (OBSD FBSD)

cheers

FreeBSD is the better choice for first BSD to try out.

I don't know about getting FreeBSD cd's in the UK (I'm sure you can...) but the easiest and cheapest way to install FreeBSD is an FTP installation. You download two floppies, boot them, and let the FreeBSD installer download everything it needs over your internet connection. Or you can download a FreeBSD ISO image and burn it to cd yourself. The FreeBSD Handbook at www.freebsd.org has instructions on either of those install methods.

You can also get FreeBSD cd's online. The cheapest is Cheap Bytes (www.cheapbytes.com), but none of the proceeds will go to the FreeBSD project. You can also get the "Official" cd sets from the FreeBSD Mall (www.freebsdmall.com) or BSD Mall (www.bsdmall.com). Those will be more expensive, but part of the proceeds will go to the FreeBSD project. All three of those will ship internationally.

Oh, you lucky person, UK is one of the few sources of FreeBSD on DVD! This means that you can get the distribution and the entire set of binary packages on one disc! Here's where:

FreeBSD Services Ltd
11 Lapwing Close
Bicester
OX26 6XR
United Kingdom
WWW: http://www.freebsd-services.com/

Best of luck,

many thanks however do I want FreeBSD 4.5 or 4.6.1 which isnt released yet??????

Get the latest release, 4.6. One of the wonderful things about FreeBSD is the ease of upgrading. You probably won't need to reinstall until 5.0.

Best of luck,

hmmm but its £40 and Im a poor student

maybe I'll get 4.4 for a £5 instead :D

£40 sounds like a box-set price to me. If you look around on the net you should be able to get the actual CDs for much less. FreeBSD has good documentation on its website, so you can manage without printed documentation.
