attempting to understand ports
i have a fresh install of freebsd 5.3
i would like to load several things but baby step first my os is at the console prompt with no gui cvs has been setup and applied; no errors were encountered; and no mail appears. SO it looks good from this side of the screen. i would like to load KDE. the last time i was at this spot it compiled for hours and it resulted in errors. so i pose the question to the *NIX world at large. what is my next step? Oh! don't worry about offending me. i'm a career IT admin/mgr from the bg universe so i'm only a newbie for as long as it takes to become fluent in *nixism. Thanks! b |
Hehe,
Frob23 promised in this thread http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...readid=316548. That he will post some more info about the package port stuff. Otherwise, tjeck this one. http://www.onlamp.com/topics/bsd/FreeBSD This has some generel topics that I´ve found quite usefull. (Not setting op the ports system though, but alot of other stuff. I managed to install most of my stuff by. Code:
pkg_add -r progName Code:
pkg_add -r kde |
nope. i haven't tried that one at not from a ports perspective. i just issued it and we'll see.
my first attempt in the ports, i tried the ./configure, make and make install route and that's what hosed my system. knowing when to download or use the ports AND when to use pkg_add vs. ./configure is one of my challenges. but hey! it's all fun so far. if you can keep me in the loop with any response you get from Frob23. i've gotten really good info from him. i will check out the links too, thanks! |
When coming from a fresh install, XML::Parser and libtool were both had to be updated/installed.
What's your error? |
looks familar but that was 2 installs ago or 3
i just got back home and saw the last cmd i entered within ports and it appears to have worked. and it did. i just fired up KDE and it looks great (i did the Xorg thing earlier) so now i have a better understanding of ports. |
