ACPI and FreeBSD 4.9

I am running FreeBSD 4.9, have run it for years, and love it. But there has always been one thing that I have never got working right. That is automatic powerdown when I shutoff. This doesn't bother me because I never shut my computer off but I figured I might as well ask and see if anyone has solved this problem.

I have apm compiled into my kernel but `shutdown -p now` still acts exactly like -h. Do I need to add device acpica to my kernel for this to work normally? Is it worth it if it is going to make my computer less stable?

Does anyone have a working setup that powers down automatically? I know the hardware is capable of doing it. Like I said, this is no big deal for me because I never shutdown. I was thinking of it because my mom always forgets to hold the button in and its wasting power. If I could get it to power down her computer it would be nice.

Am I even on the right track with acpi and apm?

Just as a note: Yes I did need to add that device. Yes it does now work. I would still like to know if it is going to affect stability.
