A freebsd issue....
sorry if i sound like more noob than you can handle but i need some help. How can i change my default window manager to KDE instead of Gnome from the when i startx? FreeBSD 4.7
|
there is a bsd forum here you know....
|
a quick way to fix it is to type either kde or gnome instead of startx it does mostly the same thing...as far as how to change it for when you use the startx command i dont know try the bsd forum as acid suggests...also your not supposed to double post...

ahh yes you do know. it doesn't seem though that you know how to read the rules. please do NOT ask a question more than once. |
yes but almost noone posts there
|
that is no excuse. that will not affect the likelihood of a reply. please stick to the rules.
|
heres a post on the same issue...is tells how to do it in linux it may be the same for bsd searching can often yield answers much faster than posting

And on another note, its very rare that your question will go unanswered in the bsd forum. We have plenty of bsd guru's here that scan the forum on a regular basis. |
barring goofing about with xdm, create a file in /home/whateveruser called .xinitrc with the path to the init file for the wm. For fluxbox for instance I think its /usr/X11/bin/fluxbox
That's it, or better really is to link .xinitrc to a pre-built xinitrc... which were probably installed with the rest of the system, a locate will find 'em. Offhand this is any system with X, Linux, the BSDs... Cheers, Finegan |
Hi all,
I must take Avenging_Angel's part: Many questions arising on a FreeBSD system are not system specific and only need a GENERAL UNIX KNOWLEDGE to answer. This was the case, too. If it is so, why should not he ask his question in the Linux forum, where he is likely to get a quick answer? I think the spirit of this site is 'friendliness and helping each other disinterestedly' and not 'keep the rules and maybe you get help one day'. The latter should be reserved to the microsoft support. This is my opinion, apart from my gratefulness to acid_kewpie and trickykid who are the first to help when needed. |

If you don't, your post is either going to be closed or moved to it. If you think you have a question that is only Unix in general, don't even mention it in your question then. But it always helps others if they know what OS they are actually dealing with. With this type of attitude of, "we should be able to post anywhere to get a faster response" our BSD forum is never going to be to any good use to members and people browsing. And never take consideration of you seeking a fast answer, most of the time you will get a very fast response on this site, other times your question can go a several days or longer without a response even leading up to no response. Another point, say anonymous user 1 came along and needed an answer to his bsd question, he see's a BSD forum right next to the Newbie Linux forum, which one do you think he's gonna look in first to see if his answer is already asked ?? Point taken, ask your questions in the BSD forum thought please. Lets try to make our BSD forum the best one available. |

Also if i am not mistaken my question Is a newbie question. So I didn't exactly post at random. : A_A trying not to sound to arrogant : |
Avenging_Angel,
I was not replying to yours but mainly to J_Szucs response as you can see I quoted him when I replied. Though this is a newbie question, its still a BSD question which belongs in our BSD forum. Issue dropped, lets move on now. |
i'm just going to move this to the bsd forum and let finny merge it with the other thread.
