a couple Q's....

I got my hands on this old sparc workstation.... the 4/50 architecture. I have gotten o.k. working around in linux, but am having some problems with this.

this line:

le0: No carrier - transceiver cable problem?

keeps coming up. I've done some searches and it looks like a common problem. I am not going to connect it to any network in the near future, so I followed these steps to get rid of it:

1) Remove the file called <hostname>.le0 from the /etc directory, or
change its name to <hostname>.xx0.

2) Locate the following line in /etc/hosts: localhost

Change this line to the following: localhost "hostname"

This will cause any reference to "hostname" to go to,
which is the default address of the loopback device.

3) If there is a line in /etc/hosts like the following, comment it out or
remove it to remove the association between the hostname and the IP

192.x.x.x "hostname"

*************************************that all went O.K., but the next step:

4) Make sure there is an entry in the /etc/rc.boot file that looks
like this:

ifconfig lo0 up

I am having problems with.... I don't have the /etc/rc.boot file. Does anybody know what file I should look for instead?

Also, I can't seem to save anything new. I can alter existing files, but when I try to write a new one, I can't ex:

(/home)618}cat 'test' > test
bash: test: Operation not applicable

ALSO... Where is root's home directory? there is no "/root"

Any help would be great...

p.s.- does anybody know of a good mailinglist (like LQ) for bsd?
