2 questions about the ath driver
 

Hi!
I was just wondering if...

1) the ath kernel module is present in OpenBSD and FreeBSD?
2) is the Atheros ar5007eg card supported by this kernel module?

I've searched for these two questions and I've not been able to clarify my ideas!

Searching madwifi.org says using the latest snapshot release should allow it to work.

The ath driver included in *BSD is the same the Madwifi provides? I thought Madwifi was Linux software only. Am I right?

On the other hand, I've been able to install the ar50007eg on Linux so I'm not just asking if there is any kind of support for this card on Linux. I've been thinking to switch to *BSD in my laptop and I would like to know if there is any chance to get ar5007eg working in *BSD before changing.

Madwifi has nothing related to ath(4). Some Madwifi developers want to use OpenBSD's open source replacement to the binary only HAL that Madwifi uses, they've nicknamed it the OpenHAL. But otherwise, there is nothing that even remotely connects the two codebases.

Madwifi is a bunch of GPL code, and thus totally useless to BSDs. The ath driver is not a kernel module, it is an in-kernel driver. Noone has given a report of OpenBSD and the ar5007eg card working together yet, you'd be best off giving OpenBSD and FreeBSD both a trail run and seeing if one does the job or not. Since the ath developer works from FreeBSD, and the hal's developer OpenBSD, it's the best way to try when you're talking BSD and Atheros. Reyk and Sam are their names, Reyk from OpenBSD and Sam from FreeBSD.
