[OpenBSD -current] monitor resolution question.

hello all.

i have openbsd 6.4 current on my (dual boot) box.
my graphix card is GeForce GTX 960 and ive got Intel Core i7-6700K processor.
mobo is ASUSTeK Z170 PRO GAMING.

i have 43" 4k tv as a monitor, it works nicely when i boot linux (Fedora 28), but when i boot openbsd (xfce4) my max resolution is 1024x768.

resolution i would like to see is : 3840x2160~30Hz

ill post dmesg when i boot bsd. (using fedora atm)

If the concern is resolution while in X - see /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of xrandr(1) for an indication of the cause.

If the concern is resolution in the console, that's usually dependent upon BIOS or EFI facilities. Your dmesg(1) may help.

From your Xorg.0.log:
Code:
[ 5455.902] (II) VESA: driver for VESA chipsets: vesa
[ 5455.902] (WW) NV: Ignoring unsupported device 0x10de1401 at 01@00:00:0
Your graphics hardware is NVIDIA, and you are limited to using VESA.

On OpenBSD, there is only limited support for a selection of older NVIDIA cards, through X.Org's nv(1) driver, written when NVIDIA still published open source drivers with their closed interfaces. They no longer do so, and only produce drivers as Binary Large Object Blocks (BLOBs) for select OSes, which are acceptable to those other OSes.

While it doesn't help you with this limitation, OpenBSD did produce a song about it.

Intel or Radeon. See drm(4), intel(4), and radeon(4).

It's not listed among the radeon(4) cards. And 6 months ago, it didn't appear to be supported.

thanks for your wisdom, i would have bought wrong card otherwise.

i found a thread and there were this card : R5 230.

https://www.reddit.com/r/openbsd/com.../4k_amd_build/
Code:
AMD's product names are deceptive because they repackage older cards all the time between generations.
The R5 230 is an example of a current card that is supported by OpenBSD simply because it is a repackaged HD6450.
i think that is the card i am going to buy. its so cheap 45-60 €
its max resolution is 2560 x 1600 , i can live with that.

That was in reply to this comment, which may also be helpful.
