I was having trouble getting an onboard Asus soundcard to work (it used an i810) so I chucked in my old $15 CMI based sound card and it works "out of the box" in a RH9 installation - works perfectly from the start, plays Unreal 2k4 with out modification - including the voice facility :)

Came onboard my mobo (iWill XP333 Ali chipset). Works great with ALSA 1.0.4 (with the configure options --with-cards=cmipci --with-isapnp=no), and it supports full duplex fine. The only hassle is that ALSA cant seem to play more then 1 audio stream at a time. Also, ALSA doesnt save my mixer settings when I reboot, but thats an ALSA bug. Overall, great card if you dont really want Dolby Surround with 12 speakers and 32 audio streams (I wish I could have that kind of card or speaker set :D).

Purchased an Inland Soundcard PCI Wavetable, which has C-Media's 8738 on it, and the card works perfectly with SuSE Linux Personal 9.0. The overall audio quality with Cambridge SoundWorks PC Works speakers is excellent. Very pleased.

good card. good sound. only problem is that I can only get it to play 1 audio stream at a time. it sucks that i cant play music and have the sounds for gaim or other programs....unless i did something wrong.
supported with 2.6 and 2.4 kernels (atleast they have for me)
kernel module is snd_cmipci
I have the onboard sound with my Soyo kt400 dragon ultra platinum mobo, not the PCI version

I have been using this soundcard since the kernel 2.4.21 has been released. All the while, i didnt use this soundcard with the kernel provided by slackware. I build the kernel of my Linux box from source that was obtained at kernel.org. This card works fine from 2.4.21 until 2.4.26. A normal soundcard with almost perfect reliability.

This is a cheap card but the price paid is poor compatibility. The card has great difficulties working in full 5.1 mode under linux. You are better off spending the little extra to get a "soundblaster live!". The compatibility is much better though im not sure about the sound quality difference. It is probably slight.

This one was a bit jiggy

Fedora dected it when i plugged teh thing in but i was unable to activate it as the OS refused to switch from my Integrated SIS soundcard to this one. After re-installing FC4, this one is working fine. heck!! 20 CAD$ for 4.1 sound !!! and no drivers need be installed aye.

This is possibily the most widely supported Linux sound card. Puts out pretty good sound, will work out of the box most of the time. The cards are very cheap too, most of the time under $10.

Playback works fine, except for the lack of hardware mixing (only one sound can play at a time), but recording is marginal - I couldn't record through the Line In port, and the Mic input requires a preamp if you want to use an actual microphone with it. Still, if you're not doing any recording, it's a decent choice.

Worked out of the box, except don't get any sound from the front speaker of my 5.1 system.
