hey guys, I'm in a bit of a bind.. well a big bind.

I installed ubuntu hardy recently and got everything rolling pretty good, but then I noticed some random lockups and slow boot times. I checked my logs and the only thing that seemed out of place was tons of lines:

Code:

Nov 25 12:22:24 mike-work kernel: [ 383.343214] eth1: (82593) System Error occurred (0)

also some lines of this:

Code:

Nov 25 12:18:25 mike-work kernel: [  141.692480] 0000:05:07.0: tulip_stop_rxtx() failed (CSR5 0xfc06c012 CSR6 0xff970111)

So I'm assuming my problems are coming from that. It freezes so often now that I can't even get to a desktop, but when I was still able to the only thing I knew to do was go to the graphical network settings and disable eth1 to no avail. Next I tried going to the interfaces file in /etc and commented out eth1... but that didn't help either.

So I'm stuck, I posted on UF, but no answer.

If it makes a difference eth1 is supposedly referring to my onboard LAN card and I even tried turning it off in bios.

this is what ifconfig says about it

Code:

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:4c:69:6e:75:79
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
          Interrupt:19 Base address:0xa400

any tips would be appreciated... and a fix would be awesome :)

Thanks
Mike

I've been clicking the random blog button in hopes that I will find an interesting article or linux related pondering that somebody has posted. However, more often than not, I come across questions that people are asking. Why ask technical linux questions in your blog? Is it a way of storing your question so you can look back on it later and research it? Or are people just testing out the blog system? Either way, I like knowing I have a blog here. It gives me a place to post interesting things that I come across or what I plan on doing.

Anybody using their blog for something interesting?

You don't need to fork over big bucks – or even any bucks – to keep your online activities and identity secret. The open source community has dozens of privacy-related projects in development, and some of them have already proven themselves to be among the best privacy protection tools available. These tools are targeted at three broad groups of people. First are products aimed at the general public. Everyone with a computer needs applications like firewalls, anti-spyware, intrusion prevention, and password management. But there are also email encryption, anonymous file sharing, anonymous surfing, and other apps for those with more pressing privacy needs.

Hi,
Just looking for some info on the steps to copy exactly the contents of a disk to another for use in the same system. I want to use this as a backup disk if the first one goes.

Both drives are identical 36.4gb scsi, I havent physically plugged the second one into the server yet (Compaq DL350 G2). There is only 1 drive in their at present so no raid to be considered.

The OS is SCO Open server 5.

I not new to Linux but I have only ever learned to do certain things like FTP at command line and I can ls and move around the filesystem fairly well

So my questions are:

1. When I plug in the new drive and boot will I see it in the OS or will I have to mount it?

2. Can I copy the first drive to the second using DD? (While booted into the OS?) and will both disks be bootable afterwards, i.e. can I remove my old drive and put my newly DD'd disk into the first slot in the cage and away I go?

Or should I go with a live CD and use something like Ghost?

Many thanks for any pointers.

Rds,
Owen.

The PasTmon passive traffic monitor keeps an eye on your network, recording which clients are interacting with which services, when and how long things took. You can then use the application's PHP Web interface to investigate these figures to see if any host is connecting to Web services that it shouldn't, or is contacting services suspiciously more frequently than you would expect for normal operation, or when response times become excessively long. The Ubuntu, openSUSE, and Fedora repositories do not include packages for PasTmon. Although the version number is still low, the project has had releases available for three years.

I started this thread to get information about the new upcoming 11.1 version of OpenSUSE. I am using 11.0 and I made a mistake by upgrading because 10.3 was faster and better. Maybe 11.0 was okay, but it is possible that my mistake was to choose KDE 4.0 instead of 3.5.
Anyway, there must be plenty of people now using the 11.1 who could share the experience.
So, should I stick with 11.0 or upgrade, and what version (of KDE/Gnome).
Thanks,
includedir /etc/xinetd.d

I'm happy to announce that we've recently enabled some additional account features for all members with over 150 posts. Some additional features include:

* Enabled private messaging. This allows you to send and receive PM's. Please note that technical questions should not be sent via PM. If you do receive a technical question, please do refer the member back to the forum, so all members can benefit from the answer.
* Added the ability to upload a profile picture.
* Added the ability to further customize both your profile and blog pages.

We decided to enable these upgrades as a thank you for your continued dedication to helping others at LQ. Your account will automatically be upgraded once you reach 150 posts (this number is subject to change, but all upgraded accounts will always be grandfathered in).

In addition, based on feedback we have slightly changed permissions for members with 0 posts. Before you have a post, both your blog and ability to start social groups will be disabled. This was done to make it clear where the appropriate place to first post content is (the forum). As soon as you have a single post, your account will gain full access to all site functionality.

As always, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions please let us know. Your feedback is important to us and we really do listen.

Hello:

This is a problem involving slackware 12.1 (not 12.0). If you do not have 12.1, there is no need for you to waste any of your time reading this post. :)

OK, still reading? Then you have slackware 12.1. Cool.

Are you using a Conexant HCF/HSF "softmodem" (dialup modem, a card inside the machine, essentially a winmodem)?

If you are not, well, you're a lucky person. Life is good for you. You can skip to the next thread: no further need to read this one.

--
--
--

Still reading? Ok, then you have the modem and you are running slackware 12.1. Have you got it working? Can you go online?

If the answer is yes, then EXCELLENT!

so ... to the meat of this post ....

How did you do it? Can you let me know? Thanks in advance.

p.s. - I found several answers on google. Alas, they were the wrong answers: they didn't fix the problem for me.

p.p.s. - the driver worked for me with slackware 12.0.
