Very fast install with a graphical installer, only ran into a couple of minor hitches that were easily remedied (the X autoconfig option failed but the more longhand option did the trick plus I had to do some additional post-install network configuration via Vasm to get on teh intertubes).
This OS performs great-fast and snappy, good package management tools (a bit similar to apt) and so far very stable. I'm running an older box and I would actually choose this over something similarly more lightweight like AntiX.
In fact, I'm well impressed enough that I think Vector just won another convert.

I downloaded the VL6.0. I had huge hopes from it. Specially as I had found VL5.9.1 to be awesome and spectular (I am running out of superlatives here).
But VL6.0 was a big dissapointment. The GUI would crash whenever I tried to open the terminal, VLC did not start many more I dont want to bore you with.

Vector comes as a live disk or an installation disk, and the standard edition can have Xfce 4.4 or KDE 3.5. I chose to install the Xfce version.

You get a choice of mouse or keyboard installers. I used both, and they were easy enough to use. I had to install twice, because the auto-configuration option I chose for the X window system failed and so I had to start over again and choose the standard configuration (which seemed automatic enough to me). Luckily an installation only lasts 15 minutes. A nice point is that the installer encourages the use of /home: so many beginners don’t create this and regret it later. It also enables you to choose which programs are installed.

The choice of software supplied had some odd features. There is a lot of duplication: Dillo, Firefox, Opera, and Seamonkey; Mplayer, VLC, and Xine; Bluefish, Medit, and Leafpad. On the other hand, there is no email client if you don’t install Seamonkey. Other software includes Gimp, Inkscape, Scribus, Abiword, and Gnumeric. Apart from one critical warning for Abiword, all ran without complaint, as one would expect from a Slackware-based distro. The repository is rather sparse: no LibreOffice (they’re still using OpenOffice), pdftk, or units, for example. I tested gslapt by installing Fontforge, and it was quick and successful.

Flash and the codecs are supplied, and media files played well.

Vector idled at 100MB, and so would be quite happy on 256MB.

I’m not sure that Vector is one for beginners, but it offers a pleasant Linux for the reasonably competent.
