I picked this book up when I first switched from windows to Linux. I tried using the man pages first but couldn't get the hang of them immediately, and like most newbies I had so many question about how to do various tasks that posting on a board and waiting for a reply for every single little thing was far to time consuming. Getting this book helped out TREMENDOUSLY. The sections are split up well so it is easy to find a command to do what you need even if you don't know what the command is or would be called, and when you find the one you are looking for the writing is clear enough for you to then be able to use the command to accomplish what you set out to do. Each command is also accompanied by an example that lets you see exactly how it should be used. If you are already comfortable with the man pages then you don't need this book, and the same goes if you never plan on using the terminal. If, however, you want to learn the command line and are not yet comfortable with the man pages, then this book is highly recommended.

This book is awesome. Small enough to take anywhere with you and is helpful to both the seasoned Linux user and the new Linux user.

A new Linux user will (at some point) be faced with the challenges of unpacking an archive, searching for words or lines in text files, installing software, and making file system changes such as moves or copies of files/directories.

This book addresses these important topics and (for some) may help to overcome the initial trepidation one might face at that blinking "$" prompt in the CLI.
