Joe Celko was a member of the ANSI SQL standards commitee for 10 years. This book attempts to teach procedural and object-oriented developers proper set-oriented programming principles. While Celko's SQL style is beyond reproach, his writting style can be a little abrasive. If you use SQL Server auto-incrementing identity fields, you'll be happy to know Joe thinks you're an "id-iot", for example. :o :D Like to superimpose OO design on top of an RDBMS? Joe knows the end result: "qureies that would have been so easy in a relational model are now multitable monster outer joins". He even quotes Stroustrup who concludes: "OO was great for programming (front-end applications) but deadly for data."
So if you're already set in your programming ways this might not be the book for you. If you want to learn the RIGHT way to use SQL however, then nobody will drill the necessary info into your head like Celko. Whether you want to hear it or not! ;)
