I ran into problems trying to startx. The book really doesn't give you munch help regarding those sort of problems; and, if you are rather inexperienced in programming or working with an editor to change a file in BSD, you are really going to have problems. Hardware is a big issue with FreeBSD and they are more apt to work with older hardware that is put together as to not present conflicts. I never really did get FreeBSD working properly, so I returned to Debian. But, if I was to recommend a system for most people it would be Ubuntu or Debian with Ubuntu being the first choice for most people. I was impressed with PCBSD to some extent, but I understand Debian better and flavors of Debian in operating systems. Ubuntu and systems like it are more user friendly than flavors of BSD. It's my opinion based on what I went through and I could be dead wrong, too. It all depends on how much you know about operating systems and programming. I am not that bright.
