This 700 page book takes you from the absolute beginning of each Perl concept, to a very good understanding of each. I was frustrated with other Perl books when I found this one (Perl was my first 'real' language), but this was easy to understand and had my quickly writing useful Perl programs. Don't confuse easy to understand with "basic" as this book is quite throrough in its coverage of each concept. It also has an excellent reference section in the back.
I found it best to use the Llama book (Learning Perl) alongside this one. Learning Perl crams the details into a small space and is an excellent refresher for each topic learned in Beginning. The difference between the two is, Beginning is more thorough and includes tons of great examples (even full programs) while Learning has few examples and is better for someone already familiar with programming concepts.
It can be found for free on the net: http://learn.perl.org/library/beginning_perl/ but is worth purchasing as a reference. There is now a 2nd edition out, but as Simon doesn't appear to be the main writer (and it's 300pgs smaller) I do not know if it would be as effective as this one.
