I went through the following distros to arrive at Mepis.
-Suse - went it like butter, but it's SLOW unless you recompile it, and I don't know enough yet to do that.
-Slackware - loved the speed, but no support from www.slackware.org - when they promise in writing to help you with the install if you buy the official CD's. I did, they didn't, and no one could resolve a problem I was having with write-to-floppy.
-Debian - very rapid help from users, still had hardware issues w/my floppy drive, sound card, and screen resolution.
Going to Mepis solved all my hardware issues. It's supposed to have a custom-tuned kernel for improved hardware detection. Mepis is a blend
of Knoppix and Debian's Sid distro. It runs directly from the CD, and has an install easy enough for a newbie like me.
But unlike Suse, it's still easy to get 'under the hood' for personalized tweakage. Mepis is the best distro I've tried - I highly recommend it!
