Pros: Great tool for music, video, and graphics production
Cons: None noticed

Ubuntu Studio is Ubuntu with a low-latency kernel and plenty of software for artists and musicians. Reviews by professionals in these fields have been favourable.

It comes on a 2GB DVD. No checksum seems to be available, but disk will check itself. It will run in 640MB, thanks to the Xfce desktop, although more will be needed if you start editing videos, for example. Installation takes only 4GB of HD. There are versions based on Ubuntuís current and LTS editions; I used the 32-bit LTS version.

The disk has Ubuntuís usual problem of lock-up with some video chips: in that case, press F6 and choose nomodeset. The installer is simple and allows encryption of /home.

Thereís good documentation, and a useful package list at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/PackageList

The software includes Firefox, Xchat, Shotwell, Audacious, Totem, and Xine; for graphics we get Gimp, Inkscape, Mypaint, Darktable; for audio, Ardour, Musicscore, and various midi and jack tools; for video, Blender, Openshot, and a subtitler. Codecs and Flash are provided but no office software. Some programs left errors when run from the CLI, but everything worked.

This seems to be the best distro of its type.
