Unmainained Packages in Portage
|
I Love Gentoo for sticking to standard linux conventions and tutorials for running linux from command line. With Gentoo, you learn Linux.
Some of the packages in portage are not maintained well and will not compile because of missing functions, symbols, etc. I've seen this with other distro's...so it's not like it doesn't happen in other distros. But with Gentoo alot more so. However, there is good support and if you have the time you can get through it. If you know C, all the much better.
Also, portage offers all the packages for Linux enthusiasts. No restrictions in what is available in it's repositories. This is def. the true hobbyist Linux.
I also like how you can compile packages with emerge, and customize what classes to compile with(keywords). This allows you to have a very light weight, non bloated system.
