Problem with codecs
|
The barebone option provides just the Netsurf browser and Sylpheed email client: if you want any more, you can add it yourself. It would just work in 64MB, which would be very useful for some.
The light option replaces JWM with Ice and Netsurf with Midori, and adds Xchat, VLC & Xine, Mtpaint, Geeqie (image viewer), Epdf, Ted (wordprocessor), and Abs (spreadsheet). Unfortunately the installed media codecs didn't seem to work; I could play wmv files with Xine, but other formats were sound only. This would run in 128MB, although 256MB would be better.
The medium version, which I haven't tried, gives you LXDE and adds Firefox, Abiword, and Gnumeric. 512MB is the recommended RAM.
Apart from the codec problem, all the software worked well. If you don't need a video player or can wait until the bug is fixed, this is a good option for a small computer.
