Vector comes as a live disk or an installation disk. Currently it is only available in 32-bit form, but a 64-bit version has reached beta stage. The installer is easy to use and has pop-up help. It allows for some degree of customisation and even lets you select system services. The website installation instructions are out-of-date and should be ignored.
Two GUI’s are installed: Xfce (the default) and Fluxbox. With the former, you get an attractive desktop with the usual panel and a cairo dock; it will run software in 256MB, but would be happier with 512. There are plenty of configuration tools that are easy to use. Fluxbox, with a bare grey screen and minimal panel, will just about work in 128MB. The minimum processor suggested is Pentium III.
There’s a generous amount of software for a CD: Firefox, Opera, Pidgin, Xchat, Abiword, Gnumeric, Gimp, Inkscape, Dia, Shotwell, and lots of media programs: Exaile and Grip; Gnome-mplayer, Umplayer, and Xine. Codecs, Flash, and Java are all installed. Everything worked perfectly, as one would expect from a distro based on Slackware. There’s no email client installed, but Claws-mail, Thunderbird, and Sylpheed are in the repository. Packages are installed with Gslapt or the command slapt-get, and the process is easy and fast. I also successfully installed a driver for my printer.
The few problems I’d had with version 6 no longer exist, and this is now an excellent distro.
