Description: "More busy than busy bees, we're once again here to announce the immediate availability of Sabayon 7. Linux kernel 3.0, GNOME 3.2, KDE 4.7, Xfce 4.8, LibreOffice 3.4 are just some of the things you will find inside the box. During this cycle, the development team spent a lot of time on integrating GNOME 3.2 the way users might actually start to love it. At the same time, Sabayon Xfce has been promoted to non-experimental release, for those missing GNOME 2."

Pros: Codecs and Flash installed. Easy installation, Cutting-edge
Cons: Odd bugs and a horrible package manager

For this test, I've used the 32-bit Xfce version.

Installation went smoothly, using a customised version of Fedora's Anaconda.

This is not really a complete Xfce experience. Surely Alacarte, the menu editor, should have been included? I also looked for the keyboard manager plugin, but that wasn't even in the repository.

There always seems to be something that doesn't work in Sabayon. Midori kept crashing, until I changed the home page. Totem was completely broken, so I installed VLC. That worked, but the picture disappeared if you moved its window.

The one constant in Sabayon is its horrible graphical package manager, Sulfur. A thousand packages listed in an order you don't know, with comments in pale pink! Even if you avoid this by using the command line, there are the dependency problems: VLC needs Mysql? I don't think so!

And why no email client on the DVD?

A reviewer once said that the Sabayon team are more interested in adding things than testing them, and I think that sums it up. If you want a rolling-release Xfce distro, get Mint.
