Saline is based on Debian Stable, which it tries to make more friendly. It thus resembles Mepis, but with Xfce instead of KDE.
It installs from a live DVD, and has a manual which can be consulted during the process. The installer, which uses Gparted if required, is simpler than that of Debian and gives the opportunity to install media codecs and proprietary video-card drivers.
The disk has a good selection of software from Debian Stable.
One of the weaknesses of Debian is having to set up the repositories, and the unfriendliness of Synaptic. This has not yet been tackled: Synaptic still offers a confusing array of options: e.g. www, www contributors, www non-free, multimedia, video.
For a distro which has only been available for 5 months, this is a very impressive offering which is well worth trying.
