Description: Ubuntu Netbook dition has been optimised for a small screen, and does not have long-term support, but is otherwise the same as the standard version. The default configuration replaces the conventional menu with a full-screen application selector.

Pros: Easy to install and use, suitable for small screens
Cons: Needed some work to access audio and video files

The system installed easily into less than 3GiB of HD and is currently running, with Firefox, in less than 200MiB of memory.

The default menu system occupied the full screen and provides clear, large icons for easy selection with a small screen and touchpad. This can be replaced by a conventional Gnome desktop at login, if preferred.

Media codecs were very easily installed. Unfortunately, they seemed to have no effect on Totem, which played every sort of video file as sound only! Installing Gnome Mplayer solved the problem, but the beginner shouldn't be faced with it in the first place.

Pros: Easy for a newbie to learn to use
Cons:

Purchased preloaded on a System 76 Starling netbook. Only problem so far was a complete system freeze-up after a couple of hours on "suspend." Recommendation- shut down if you are going to be away from the computer for a while. Has been "plug and play" for a printer, external multimedia drive and wireless mouse.
