Failed to install

When I ran the live CD, I was pleased to see an option to check the medium. Unfortunately, this simply locked up the computer.
The last time I tried Unity I was unable to get a GUI. This time the first attempt to run the live CD failed because of a simple bug (undeclared variable) in the video driver, but a second attempt using the "safe VESA" option succeeded.
The installer formatted the selected partition, did mysterious things for about 15 minutes, and then reported "unable to install files". That was it: no further explanation.
The idea behind Unity is that it will install the basic tools and let you select just the applications you need. So will Sabayon CDX edition, and that works. Alternatively, the Fedora DVD has a custom install option.
Unity obviously works for some people, but in the absence of any proper error reports it's impossible to say what their computers have that mine lacks.
