I have an older laptop, with only 192 Mb of RAM, it had a major crash last year. I have re-installed Windows-XP several times. The scrolling is jerky and the WiFi drivers won't install anymore. All this makes it a perfect computer for testing many of the smaller distros available.
So I need a smaller light-weight Linux distro to run it. I have installed several over the past few months.
I now have a dual-boot with PuppyLinux 4.2.4 and the new Puppy 4.3
I like the easy and convenient way that the smaller distros will open straight to RAM, even a laptop with a smaller memory can handle this. A person never has to install Puppy 4.3 but run it from Live CD or a USB flash-drive. The USB install program was easy to learn and very informative. The new PuppyLinux 4.3 opened quickly and the install manager was simple and straight forward. Install took less than 15 minutes total. The WiFi/Wireless config manager was, also, simple to use and connected to the internet quickly.
The 'only' thing that didn't appeal to me, from the start, were the desktop icons ... they were too large and child-like. I found ways to change the desktop theme and icons and desktop panels in the PuppyLinux Forums. The forum members were very helpful.
The best part of the PuppyLinux 4.3 distro is the ease and stability of the WiFi connection and how fast Puppy down-loads files from FireFox 3.0 (default) I would rather use the old laptop with PuppyLinux 4.3 installed, for downloading a large file, than the newer and larger PC. The PC will download a file through a Wireless USB 3G internet connection at average 12-17 Kb/s while Puppy 4.3 will download the same file at speeds of 150-210 Kb/s A file will download 10 times faster through the PuppyLinux set-up.
I would definitely recommend Puppy Linux 4.3 for people with older or smaller RAM computers. Or for people that just want to take a Linux Distro on a USB flash-drive where-ever they happen to get on a computer.
Puppy 4.3 ...the ease and simplicity of a Linux OS that opens to RAM is unmatched. Well planned and thought out, I continue to enjoy Puppy 4.3, as the only OS on my laptop.
