From the beginning, C Primer Plus uses clear, concise language and makes the C programming language easy to grasp. The book explains in detail (an not too much) how the computer handles the various data types and walks though the subject of arrays and pointers like a breeze. All code is presented in a clear, modular fashion and conforms to ANSI standards. Each chapter includes a comprehensive set of review questions and for the more adventurous, a set of programming exercises which allow you to unleash your new found skills. To finish the author devotes an entire chapter to advanced data representation – explaining linked lists, abstract data types and binary trees. C Primer Plus’ biggest let down is its lake of OS specific code. The examples limit you to console based programs that utilise the standard library of ANSI C functions, which are ideal for the majority of programming tasks but not for creating GUI based programs or those which need to talk to the operating system. Overall this book is an essential tool for learning C and makes an ideal stepping stone if you want to learn C++. I bought this book because I was struggling to understand the more advanced features of the language – instead it has given me a sound understanding and knowledge base which can be transferred when learning languages as well as being used in C.
