I can log into ZorinOs, but after that I do not have much luck with this Operating System. It is very slow opening the Menu, and even slower when trying to open one of the App's. Even if I get the App openm I never know when Zorin is going to freeze up on me, where even the mouse is frozen. Then there are the instances where the mouse moves freely about the screen, but its left and right buttons are useless.
Sometimes I am able to reboot it by holding down Alt+PrintScreen and typing R E I S U B. Unfortunately that does not always work and in those instances I have to power down from the Tower.
I am running Zorin OS 11. I am well aware that it is limited in the length it will be supported. If I were to install ZorinOS 9, there is no guarantee that my problems I am beset with this new version, will not manifest with the LTS version.
About a week ago, more or less I died install version 9.1 but it did not appear on the Grub Screen Menu, although it showed up on Gparted at "/dev/sda4". A couple days ago was when I installed ZorinOS 11 on the same partition as Zorin OS 9.1 had been situated.
When I would go to reboot, there would be "Manjaro Linux on /dev/sda3", "Mageia 5 on /dev/sda5", "PCLinuxOS on /dev/sda6", and "LinuxMint 17,3 on /dev/sda7"
Roughly ten hours ago ZorinOS shows up on the Grub Screen Menu, and i did nothing that I am aware of to facilitate this change.
I booted into Zorin's 'Splash screen' where I entered my password to the default home screen, but nothing worked. I rebooted using the REISUB schtick, and when Grub opened, I scrolled down to ZorinOS and clicked on the advanced option and then the 'recovery' button. My intent was to open Networking and enter the command:
'sudo apt-get install nvidia-current'.
Well, to make a long story short. . . too late! I settled for 'Repairing broken packages', and it was here I was able to enter the above mentioned command to install Nvidia Driver 304. It was from this point that I could login to ZorinOS, but the rest is as stated above.
i'm not sure what your problem is here; let's assume it is the sluggishness of zorin 10.
i don't know what distro and desktop environment zorin is based on, but i guess it's safe to assume that it is not exactly lightweight, so we would need your system's specs to make an assessment.
'sudo or su (depending on the distro) grub-install dev/sda* (* being the distro sequence, Mageia, PCLinuxOS, LinuxMint and Zorin)
Zorin has a Nvidia 304 Graphic Card.
The problem here is the constant crashing of this distro. The Menu is incredibly slow to launch. The Apps are also slow to launch if they launch at all? I need to change the keyboard layout from 'qwerty' to 'colemak'. I know where to make the change, but it always crashes before I have a chance to make the change.
When I use the terminal to try and update, it may not show all the letters in a commandline for example:
's do pt-ge pdate'
Followed by my password not being accepted. Here I am typing the qwerty way.
Zorin is based on Ubuntu 14.04. It is advertise as being a gateway for Window Users to get into Linux.
herakles_14, a single 3GHz core and 2GB RAM? I can see how Zorin (which i hear is absed on gnome) wouldn't run so smooth on that.
plus the legacy nvidia gpu (304.xx driver means legacy)... better go lighter!
i don't buy Zorin's "We are the most windows-like distro" anyway.
Xubuntu is just as good & newbie friendly (or unfriendly) as Zorin, Mint & co.
anyhow, on the affected zorin install, please post the output of this command:
To ondoho and rokytnji I will enter the commands in the Zorin terminal, and will post them. Providing I don't ned to enter my password and Zorin does not crash and also Firefox opens allowing me to come here to post the results.
Zorin was not cooperating tonight. Timing out several times, did a logout, login thing.
Well then. Boot Mint instead. I know for a fact it uses inxi. Since Mint does not crash and loves you plenty good.
Post inxi from both and compare differences. Do the same for ondoho command for vga.
Make sure to mention which is Mints and which is Zorins.
that looks fine. assuming you are running the right driver version (304.xx seems to be correct) - all i can do is recommend a much lighter distro.
maybe antiX or MX or something with a plain openbox desktop; maybe manjaro.
As it happens I am running Manjaro and Mageia also. I am frustrated that I can't get Zorin to work for me.
I am able to login to Zorin and have, after numerous tries and failures. managed to change the keyboard layout. It took me an equal number of frustrating trials and arrows to set it so Zorin does not log out every five minutes.
Unfortunately, Zorin is still very slow opening Apps and equally slow closing them. Then there are those moments when everything freezes up in me, and I have to power off from the tower. Last are those times when the cursor moves freely about the screen but none of the various items will open. At least, here I am able to reboot using:
"Alt+PrintScreen+b"
I know it would be easier to remove Zorin OS, replacing it with another distro, but I guess I am too stubborn and I will not go quietly into that night.
Oh, let us not forget when some of the Apps are missing key letters in their 'names'
Okay, I've rambled on long enough.
What or where should I be looking to explain the slow opening and closing of the Apps?
