I'm happy to announce that another distribution has joined LinuxQuestions.org. Please welcome Zorin OS.

Zorin OS
Welcome Zorin OS. ;)
|
Oh great! Another Distro! Why do we need another.
There are 27 distros listed. Do we need another? What makes this one special?
|
looks very Windows-like...might try it out and very very pretty
|
"looks very Windows-like" At least that is a reson to spend the time down loading, installing, testing and reformating another "pretty" distro. If you can't make it functional make it pretty.

A Big Welcome to Zorin OS
I LOVE ZORIN OS. For newer PCs with 3d graphics capabilities, it can't be beat. flash, mp3, wine, winetricks, Play on Linux, etc. and that is just the older LTS 6.3 version. I can't wait to try the new Zorin OS 7.
So, a big warm welcome from the bottom of my heart. I recommend anyone and everyone who has a spare minute, try this great distro yourself! |
So it's supposed to look like Windows and is based on UBUNTU which is itself based on Debian? How does this make it any different than Mint then? Versions are twigs, Distros are branches, UBUNTU is the tree, Debian is the root, the Kernel is the Earth and Linus is our Deity. I'm sick of hanging in the branches I'm going back to the roots.

Zorin 7
From Suse 12.3 to Zorin 7. Very happy with this OS.
|
welcome Sorin OS
I am happy to know about it
|
I've been running Zorin for awhile now, and it does everything I need. I've tried about 30 other Ubuntu based distros, and none of them satisfied me like Zorin has.
|
Welcome
Thanks for Update
|
ok...what next?
|
I live in Cuba, and official download sites for Zorin Os are forbiden to my country. Does anyone know an alternate site to get it? It would be very helpful Thanks.
no download reachable fron CUba. Does anyones knows an alternate site for downloading Zorin OS? |
Nice, that's ubuntu
It really seems worth a try: a distro with well-integrated wine. The choice of Lxde as window manager is also interesting. I also used Lubuntu but has too frequent issues with compatibility so I gave up.

I was going to have a look at zorin... Found out that only a core and educational version are free of charge, more complete versions require a creditcard...
That's it for Zorin... I would not know why to pay for Linux, most certainly not if it is just a variation of Ubuntu, which is totally free! |
The core version of Zorin already has more in it than any Ubuntu distro, save for Ultimate Edition, so it's really all you need. Everything else is available thru Synaptic, which dosen't even come with Ubuntu. I exclusively use Zorin, after trying what seemed to be ALL the other Ubuntu clone distros, they all seemed lacking compared to Z.

Being stuck on the stone age comand line is why the rest of the work looks at linux as a hobby OS. You sound like you would be happy to load programs from Holerith cards too. Just being free does not make you competative. |

By the way, did you know that newer versions of Windows have got a much more powerful command line, for those of us who prefer to have power over the system and not dependent of the whims of some GUI designers? |

synaptic is a GUI frontend, not command line, so I fail to see what *your* problem is. |
Ok I'm trying it. I seems very nice. I've been using PClinuxOS for years because it has a lot more acess to hardware details and trouble shooting. I have not been able to find where to check hardware setting in Zorn but I've only been using it for a couple of days. For instance I still have not been able to identify the video board in this machine or wireless card or any hard ware details. Not that they're not working but if I did have a question I would be hard pressed to find out what they were. Nothing in system settings under hardware to brows hardware.
One program that comes with Zorn7 is the sound recorder. Which does not work and from reviews has stopped working since Ubuntu 13. I've tried tried Audacity and gremlin and a couple of others and still cannot record any thing that comes through the system. Because I'm not seeing the hardware/sound system I'm not sure what I should select for input and.... I'm trying to record some live streaming radio shows that I can not sit and listen to with out being interupted at work. I use FreeSoundRecorder in WinXP and it works great and alows me to set up a schedule to auto start/stop recording so I can listen to the show when I get home. I tried to install it under wine but it keeps locking up. It did inPClinuxOS also but I was hoping it would work here. Anyway mabe in a couple of days I'll figure this out but it feels good with out too much eye candy. |

Zorin Lite is my main system although I regularly try out new distros. While I don't have "lite" hardware, I still prefer a lite system and I like LXDE as a DE. The integration of remastersys into Zorin allows me to keep a configured and updated Zorin on a USB drive to reinstall whenever I need to. It's fast, efficient and just works well...

This proves: not a linux guy, yet knowing it all. |
Zorin was my first choice when I retired and no longer needed to stay with Microsoft in order to synch home with work computers. Zorin is fairly easy to use, graphically pleasing, and I hope is the best way to get my Linux feet wet. The only thing confusing about Zorin is getting used to having entries for System Tools and Administration from the menu button at lower left of the screen. From the perspective of an old Winders user (and OS/2, DOS, and CP/M!!!) these designations are confusing. I usually open the wrong one when searching for tools or administrative software programs. The difference is not clear to me.

A very very welcome Zorin

Warning: This post makes use of the "Enter" key Command line vs gui someone needs to write a gui that does what you want, with the command line, providing your imagination has not been rotted away by a dependence on GUIs, you can do what you want. nothing to do with being a hobby, and more about not being a sheep. I have nothing against GUI/Text mode applications, I use them myself I also use the command line, a powerful tool. Your little trip down memory lane tells me one thing. That you are old and stuck in your ways. As such there is little point in trying to convince you to use cli. But I will say this Stop trying to beat up people who advocate the command line, you will be slaughtered. Now please, keep on topic, This thread is about Zorin OS not CLI vs GUI ( which in any case is a stupid argument, as both can and do co-exist ) |
@ firerat
Yes your right. This is about Zorin. I have found it to be a nice little OS. The inclusion of Play on Linux is a real plus to me. It's alowed me to associate file extensions to Windows programs that are not available in linux or the linux equivelents do not work or do not do what I want to do. But before I go I really have to take issue with "That you are old and stuck in your ways." Excuse me?! Really? Ha! The CL IS the old way. I look FORWARD. Forward to an OS that is easy to use and to understand that includes all including those who don't care to learn a foriegn language to able to have the access to the computing world. I use the "trip down memory lane" to illustrate experiance and the hassles of the old ways. The command line is a powerful tool in Linux only because the Linux GUI is weak. Although I have seen great strides recently and especially Zorin. I commend the developers and encourage them to greater hights of the future. |
@skikir
Firstly I shall apologise for my flippant "old and stuck" comment Maybe I am the one who is old and stuck in the ways of cli, but with respect you do not understand what the CLI is for You can yourself as a hobbyist Linux user get away without much cli but for the professional system admin, the cli is a very important and necessary tool I think it has already been mentioned that "Power shell" was introduced to later editions of Microsoft Windows a cli tool for professionals akin to what has been in use in GNU/Linux, FreeBSD and *nix for years I don't want to take anything away from Zorin, it is a nice introduction for those migrating from a Windows Desktop. But being a skinned Ubuntu it is not groundbreaking. Anyway, this is off topic perhaps we could start a thread to discus the CLI, why it is here to stay or why it should (not) be replaced by GUI |
GUIs are just a fast and dirty way to use CLIs.
Sometiems a 'CLI and text' method is much faster, and makes more sense than a GUI. Compare editing a text config file with a linux/BSD distro to reg editing with windows..... |
