Upgrade or not ?
I've been using Zorin ultimate for about six months or so and recently each time i get an update i'm reminded that Ubuntu 13.10 is available as an upgrade , it tells me i'm currently using 7 , can anyone tell me if i should click upgrade or not ?
I might add i'm not using Zorin for anything other than normal everyday domestic use and am quite happy with what i have already , Derek. |
I have not used Zorin personally. If it is based on Ubuntu 13.04 then it is supported through January 2014: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases
I recommend you check the Zorin site and forums for upgrade instructions, since I am not sure to what extent they differ from the Ubuntu instructions. Here are the upgrade instructions for "plain" Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/upgrade ---------- Post added 12-19-13 at 11:02 AM ---------- Look what I found with a little bit of searching! :) http://zorin-os.com/upgradeguide.html |
Thanks for that reply , i admit i haven't looked for an answer on the Zorin site , the last time i did it was very sparse but maybe it's time i had another visit , regarding the information in the link you provided , i does say '' if you wish to upgrade to a newer version '' , i'm not altogether sure i need or want to , i thought i had a fairly recent edition as it goes .
The reminder i get when updating provides a box to click on if i wish to upgrade , i have assumed it might be as simple and automatic as the regular updates that get installed , i shall have to look deeper in to it , thanks , Derek. |
Zorin is based on Ubuntu, which is very fast-moving. Releases are only supported 9 months. If you use 13.04 past January, you will not get any more bug fixes or security patches (use at your own risk).

Well thanks for that , i guess i'd better get on with upgrading then ,

According to the link below at distrowatch, the 6.4 release of Zorin is based on Ubuntu 12.04 so you will have updates until April, 2017

I dug out my dvd with the os on and it's zorin ultimate 07 released on the 9th of June based on ubuntu 13.04 , i bought it shortly after on the 21st so i believe it's the latest one , having said that the upgrade is ubuntu 13.10 [ it tells me i have 7 ] , coincidentally i have an update that's just popped up as i write , it's very tempting to just click on '' upgrade '' and see what happens but from what i'v read on distrowatch it appears to be a newer version of the gnome desktop but as a newbie with very limited knowledge i'm not certain i need or want it or even what would change if i did click on , i hope you understand and thanks for taking the trouble to reply , Derek. |
If everything you use the computer for is working and it is still supported to get security and other updates, there really isn't any reason to upgrade unless you just like to experiment with the newest software. I think when using a distribution like Ubuntu or Zorin which is based on it, you are better off using the LTS version until support ends or you have something which doesn't work. Your choice.

I think you have hit the nail right on the head , i'm just an average user doing everyday stuff for pleasure , in fact zorin is probably overkill for me but i liked the idea of the look changer , plus all the other effects there are to experiment with .
I am still getting regular updates and it does everything i could want so i think your suggestion is what i'm going to go with , for me zorin is just a bit of fun and so long as it keeps doing what it's doing now it'll do fine , after all i won't be without a working computer as i'm using zorin alongside win 7 and have some old equipment with other distros installed , Thanks Derek. |
